Fly Fishing: Old School, New School

fish

There has to be something said for a sport, which through the years, can be performed equally as well with gear that hasn’t changed for 50 years as it can with the high tech stuff rolling off the shelves today. I do have to admit I’m just as fascinated by the new fishing technology as I am nostalgic about the old (I’m definitely never giving up my breathable waders though).

Rod
Old School – Rogers Rod Designs, handcrafted bamboo rods made in Salida, Colorado
New School – Loop OPTi Switch rod (pretty fascinating idea combining a spey with a traditional)

Creel
Old School – GLCo. leathered creels
New School – Simms Dry Creek Flats Pack

Reel
Old School – Saracione Mark IV Ttrout
New School – Loop Evotec G3 series

Filet Knife
Old School – Rapala Fish n Fillet Knife with Sheath
New School – Global 11-Inch Flexible Fillet Knife

Flies
Old School – Royal Wulff
New School – Disco Midge

Knot Guide
Old School – Pro Knot Knot Card
New School – iPhone Fishing Knots app

Waders
Old School – Hodgman Hip Caster
New School – G4Z Stockingfoots

Jacket
Old School – Barbour Classic Durham Jacket
New School – Patagonia SST Jacket

Job Posting from Lander, WY

on_the_ranch

I am looking for an amazing person who is honest, considerate and excited to be a jack-of-all-trades. Someone to fix fence, make a gate that opens without always buying a new powder river one, repair old barns and sheds in a manner in keeping with their character, understand how water flows through a ditch and across a meadow; run a tractor or a skid steer, chain saw, shovel, backhoe, four-wheeler; how to look under the hood to see if there is oil, battery, radiator and wires or if there is air in the tires; someone who just likes being busy and doesn’t mind working alone; someone with common sense and the sense to work safely; someone who understands that all life on a ranch is not depicted in a Marlboro commercial; someone who likes working in an environment that takes pride in maintaining room at the table for everything that calls the ranch home, such as beaver, cougar, bear, red angus cattle, eagles, blue herons, churro sheep, trout, ancient cottonwoods, sage, willow and cedar, mule deer, coyotes, dung beetles, hummingbirds, and pigmy owls along with an assortment of chickens, ducks, turkeys, peafowl, snakes, voles, and an old apple orchard that desperately needs a bit ( an understatement) of pruning so we can make cider again and endless apple pies. I am looking for a magic person who is as patient with an old cow that can’t see the wide-open gate right in front of her as they are with the pick-up that decided not start this morning of all mornings; and who appreciates animals as well as himself and his tools; a person that doesn’t mind an occasional day in the saddle.

Pay and benefits are negotiable for the right person.

From Dave, via his boy Weaver. Pure gold.

Off the Hanger: Treasure of the Sierra Madre

treasure_of_the_sierra_madre_look
treasure_of_the_sierra_madre

My first introduction to this film was by a high school geology teacher that would throw it in during downtimes in the class schedule (which seemed to be more often than one would think). It was always a crowd favorite. A fabulous film with great life lessons like gold can ruin your soul and that stinking badges are definitely not needed. Photos via IMDB.

Rag & Bone – 3/4 Placket Shirt
Unshrinkable Henley
Three Forks Ranch Moleskins (sold out, anyone know of a good option moleskins? Seems like they should make a big comeback.)
1 3-4″ Veg-Tan Snap Belt
Estwing Leather Grip 22 oz. Rock Pick
Ribbed Tin Cup
American Watch Co Sterling Silver Pocket Watch
Justin Boots 8″ Lace-R’s
Stetson Chatham
Bandana
Gold Scale
Gold Pan Kit

Tulpan

tulpan.photo01tulpan.photo04

Finally caught Tulpan the other night on instant play. It might help if a person grew up around ranching to really appreciate the film, but I do think most of it taps into broad, general human experiences to which everyone can relate. Uncommon looks at family life, relationships, career struggles, and personal identity and insecurity. Highly recommended.

Off the Hanger: Substitute Teacher

OfftheHanger_Substitute
Barely out of college I started substitute teaching. I looked so young I figured I’d try and find some old man teacher stereotype clothing – my oversized concert t’s, grunge flannels, and faded jeans just weren’t going to cut it. I also grew a beard to try and age myself a bit – of course turns out patchy beards are kind of a tell.
I’d bring along Wallace & Gromit (VHS edition of course) in case the teacher totally left me without any guidance or plan (too often). My signature “trick” as a sub was to play the Sherlock Holmes game of trying to figure out as much as possible about the kids as they came into class and then work it in, seemed to keep their attention (and sometimes just plain freak them out). Some things are easy, catching names on their binders while they walk in, others a bit more subtle, if a girl has hair to her waist and it’s in perfect braids at age 8 you can bet she’s an only child, no mom of more than one has that kind of time in the morning. And of course kids with siblings in high school usually dress older or “cooler” than counterparts that don’t have that influence. When they’d start saying things like, “how’d you know that!” I’d pull out the worn paperback complete Sherlock Holmes (that I stole off that boat in AK no less) and read the section where Holmes asks Watson how many steps there are from the sidewalk up to their 2b apartment, then chides him with that classic, “you see my dear Watson, but you do not observe”.

Couple other things I picked up:
Heck yeah I’m using a red pen.
No, you really can’t be friends with them. Really. Really.
Oh and when that slightly “mature” female student pulls you aside and tells you she thinks she might be pregnant and how would she know? Grab that female PE teacher and get her over QUICK.

Polo cords
Brooks Brothers Shirt and Tie (which in rural Northern California really stood out. Sigh.)
Clark’s Desert Boot
Leather Postal Messenger bag by J. Crew (*note that the one I actually carried was, well more appropriate to a sub’s pay)
Zach Galifianakis beard

Patrick Kikut

patrick_kilkut

Found this painter who is now working at my alma mater, while trying to figure out how UW talked David Carson into signing up for duty. Nutty. At any rate, this kind of imagery really embodies what I like most about Wyoming. Its not only the beautiful landscape and wide open spaces, its the bits of human detritus that the elements tend to claim back (rather rapidly). Maybe that, and the fact I used to sling hash at the Handy Truckstop. Good stuff.
